Different languages, different personalities?

Many people believe that speaking different languages makes us feel different. Some say that they feel happier when they speak Italian or mad when they're practising their German.

What about you? Do you feel different when you speak English? French? Spanish? How different?

  4. Yes, i do. I feel kind of happier and maybe a little bit more special when I speak other languages such as English and French. It makes me feel good and nice. In my head, i am another person, a different one.

  5. I definitely agree with both of you, Nádia and Diogo. Some languages when spoken make us feel more confident and at ease. I do hope that English is one of those for you!

  7. Yes, because the language is not the same with our language, and I feel strange when I speak english, but I can feel good too.

  8. Yes because when I'm speaking portuguese I feel that I'm home and that does not happen when I'm speaking another language. But I know that if I practise more I will feel better speaking another language.

  10. Yes, I feel different when I speak another language. For example, when I speak French I feel like I'm being myself but when I speak English or Portuguese I feel like I'm another person. I need to practice more but I hope that I'm gonna speak better at the end of the year.

  11. Practising is without any doubt the key to success. The more you all speak in English, the more confident you'll be.

  16. Yes, I do. When I speak other languages, while I don't feel any different difficulty wise (if we rule out Spanish), I do feel a slight change in me. It's hard to explain what causes that change but I think I have found some reasons for it to happen. First, I believe that each language transmits the essence of the people from the place where it comes from because it has to adapt to its users (Portuguese - Warm, friendly and straightforward; Spanish - Energetic, joyful and flamboyant; English - Formal (UK)/Informal (US), practical and direct). Secondly, I think that when we speak in a language without having a certain level of experience we may feel uncomfortable and wierd, like some of the other 10th year students said they felt like and how I also felt some years ago, but with hard work, calm and determination we become better and start feeling confidant. Lastly, when I speak in English I feel proud and that I have better possibilities.

(Also, I have to apologise for taking so long to reply, but I had some problems when I tried to publish and ended up losing what I had written)

  17. I think that when we speak other languages our personality and our way to talk tends to change a little. Also, I think that the languages itself can have a ‘personality’ and its words can have different feelings associated depending on the language we speak.
